Every day at 10:00am CT, the Epic Games Store reveals the new free mystery game, replacing the previous day’s offering in the process. The December 20 free Epic Games Store game was the indie hit Loop Hero, which earned widespread positive reviews at the time of its release and is generally considered one of the better new game releases of 2021. Another mostly well-received game is the December 21 offering, with users now able to claim Second Extinction.

For those unfamiliar with Second Extinction, it’s a co-op shooter game where players have to fight off relentless waves of dinosaurs. Second Extinction is an early access title, though has received significant updates from developer Systemic Reaction that have addressed fan feedback, polished the experience, and added a proper horde mode for players to check out. Even more updates are no doubt in store for Second Extinction in the near future that should make it an even better game than it is now.

Second Extinction is the sixth free Epic Games Store mystery game released for December 2021 so far, with about nine more free games expected to be released between now and the end of the year. Epic Games Store started things off by giving away Shenmue 3 for free on December 16, which was followed up by Neon Abyss on December 17, Remnant: From the Ashes on December 18, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter on December 19, Loop Hero on December 20, and finally, Second Extinction on December 21.
It’s unclear at the time of this writing what the next Epic Games Store free game will be, but rumor has it that it will be none other than strategy game Humankind. Whether or not that actually takes place remains to be seen, but Epic Games Store users don’t have to wait long to find out as the next free game will go live on December 22 at 10am CT.
