And Spurs are one of the latter. With only Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama making their way into the club, one gets the feeling that the North London club could sign some more players to declare themselves as genuine contenders for the title.
With just over 20 days left for the window to slam shut, here are 5 players Spurs could sign to strengthen their team…
#1 Arda Turan
When Barcelona signed him from Atletico Madrid, a lot of hopes were placed on his shoulders. Fans were as excited as rival supporters were worried. And why not? The Turk is a magician with the ball at his feet and can play anywhere behind the striker.
Spurs may have some talented names in their squad, but when it comes to creative passing, only one player falls in the same bracket as the Barcelona star: Christian Eriksen.
We have often seen Tottenham struggle to break the rigid mid-table teams’ defenses last season—something that ultimately cost them the title. However, with Arda on board, there will be someone to share the creative workload with the Dane—who often becomes the victim of over-dependence.
#2 Matthias Ginter
Tottenham Hotspurs had the best defensive record in the Premier League last season and it was all thanks to the rigid pairing of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld at the heart of the defense. Spurs were lucky that none of the two had to endure a period on the sidelines because of injury and, hence, could deploy them on a regular basis.
However, luck won’t always be on their side as their backups to the two Belgians aren’t really up to the mark or the standard the two have set. And it is for this reason that the North London club should sign a defender that could easily fill in the hole should the need arise.
Matthias Ginter could be that defender. He is young and has massive potential and could share the burden of games with Alderweireld and Vertonghen, who looked tired by the end of last season.
#3 Benedikt Howedes
The only thing that could go wrong with Ginter’s signing is that he is young and his development could be hampered if he joined Spurs. However, that would not be the case if Tottenham sign Benedikt Howedes.
The Schalke captained is one of the toughest defenders in the business and has years of experience behind him. In fact, he could actually challenge both the Belgians for a starting spot and can also provide cover as a right-back should the need arise.
Given the way Ben Davies performed at centre-half at the Euros, it would be wiser for Spurs to sign an older defender and ease the Welshman into that position for the long term.
#4 Georges Nkoudou
This will happen, eventually. For weeks now, the French winger has been linked with a move to the North London, with many outlets claiming that even the medicals have been completed, but some petty issues have kept the deal from going through.
With the departure of Clinton N’Jie in the opposite direction, Spurs need a left-winger in their ranks. Right now, they have only Nacer Chadli and Heung-Min Son; the former doesn’t really come off as anything more than a decent player, while it would be too much of a risk to just rely on the latter for the goods.
And this is Nkoudou comes into play.
He had his breakthrough season last year with Marseille. His incredible burst of pace over short distance can really unsettle a lot of defenses in the Premier League. However, it would take some time for him to settle down to the club.
#5 Ante Coric
And the latest player to be linked to Spurs is the highly talented Ante Coric. The last time they signed a Croat from Dinamo Zagreb turned out to be one of their best ever players, who then turned out to be one of Real Madrid’s best ever players.
Ante Coric has a lot of similarities with Luka Modric due to his position. However, he is quite different from the Real Madrid star. While he glides through defenses with relative ease, he is a little quicker. However, there is a till a long way for him to go before he could reach Modric’s level.
Spurs have never really filled the vacancy left by Luka Modric, and Ante Coric could finally be that midfielder who creates chances from deep midfield.
